Job Description

JOB TITLE: DEAN OF MEN
REPORTS TO: President
DEPARTMENT: Residence Halls

EFFECTIVE DATE: August 1, 2024

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Dean of Men is responsible for the general operation of the Boy’s Residence Hall. This is a full time, salaried position. The Dean of Men shall agree to observe the employment and administrative policies of the SDA Church in Canada K-12 Board of Education, those policies of the SDA Church K-12 Board of Education which pertain to the operation of Kingsway College, the policies adopted by the Board of Directors of this school, and those laws and regulations of the Province of Ontario which are applicable to this school.


MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Provides a role model of successful Christian living for the students.

  • Interacts with students and models spiritual maturity in leading students towards Christ and then spiritual growth.

  • Develops a spirit of well-being and an atmosphere conducive to the spiritual, social, physical, and intellectual development of each resident.

  • Oversees the dormitory operations with a focus on safety, accountability, and cleanliness.

  • Models professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and community.

  • Provides adequate supervision of students for which he is responsible.

  • Responsible for residence hall worships.

  • Provides conditions conducive to study.

  • Maintains records that are necessary for the effective operation of the residence hall (i.e. permission forms, checkout forms, leave slips, insurance records, etc.)

  • Acts upon minor disciplinary problems in the dorm and refers major disciplinary matters to the Discipline Committee.

  • Operates the dorm within budgetary constraints.

  • Appoints and monitors resident assistants.

  • Hires necessary student labour through the work supervisor.

  • Assists in the planning of campus social events.

  • Responsible for the development and production of the dorm student handbook.

  • Corresponds with parents as necessary.

  • Approves requests for weekend leaves.

  • Supervises the habits of resident students in respect to working, studying, and sleeping; and to work with the nurse in matters relating to the health needs of the students.

  • Promotes fire and safety procedures.

  • Assesses room conditions with a student before and after he/she moves in, and where damage is apparent, levy such charges as necessary.

  • Responsible for regular room check and for the overall cleanliness of the residence hall.

  • Informs the Business Office of the arrival and departure of resident students.

  • Responsible for the overall maintenance and repair of the dorm. Works with the Plant Services Director in initiating repairs, remodeling, etc.

  • Delegates responsibilities and assigns duties to the Assistant Dean.

  • Presents to the President for approval, a work schedule for the Dean/Assistant Dean.

  • Transport students as delegated by the Administration.

  • Participates in faculty/staff meetings. Also participates in major school events (i.e. fund dinner, preview weekend, alumni weekend, graduation).

  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by their supervisor.

  • Communicates with dorm students’ parents/guardians

  • Expected to be on call for emergencies outside of on duty times

JOB STANDARDS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in theology, psychology or social work.

Experience:

  • Should have three to five years’ experience in residence hall management.

Skills:

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • A desire to mentor young people and a willingness to serve others.

  • Ability to work as a member of a team as well as independently.

  • Understand the importance of confidential information concerning students and others while maintaining a high degree of integrity and support for Kingsway College.

Personal:

  • Dedicated and active member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

  • Passionate about Adventist education and supports the mission of Kingsway College.

  • Professional, responsible, and a positive work attitude.

  • Available for weekend and evening hours when required.

  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.

Housing:

  • The Dean is required to reside in the housing provided for the Dean (at a discounted rate; conditional upon employment).
