Plant Services director
position summary:
The Plant Services Director is responsible for the overall maintenance, repair, operation, safety, and long-term stewardship of Kingsway College's facilities, grounds, equipment, and vehicles. This 12-month salaried position provides leadership and supervision for all Plant Services operations, ensuring that the campus remains safe, functional, attractive, and supportive of the school's educational mission.
The Plant Services Director reports directly to the Vice President of Finance and is expected to uphold and support the mission, values, and standards of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The incumbent shall observe the employment and administrative policies of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada K-12 Board of Education, applicable policies of Kingsway College, and all relevant provincial and local laws and regulations.
Essential Duties and responsibilities:
The following duties are representative of the position. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as required.
Leadership and Administration
Demonstrate and model Christian values and a commitment to the mission of Kingsway College.
Provide leadership and direction for all Plant Services personnel, including full-time, part-time, and student employees.
Plan, assign, oversee, and evaluate maintenance and custodial work activities.
Monitor staffing requirements and ensure optimal use of personnel and resources.
Analyze and resolve operational issues and support staff in identifying solutions to workplace challenges.
Participate as a member of the Building Committee.
Collaborate with administration regarding facility planning, capital projects, and campus improvement initiatives.
Assist the Vice President of Finance in developing and managing the Plant Services budget.
Facilities Maintenance
Ensure all campus facilities, grounds, and infrastructure are maintained in a clean, safe, attractive, and functional condition.
Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive preventive maintenance program.
Direct maintenance staff and contractors engaged in painting, repairs, renovations, and structural maintenance of buildings and furnishings.
Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, safety standards, and quality expectations.
Monitor facility conditions and recommend improvements, repairs, and replacements as appropriate.
Grounds and Campus Operations
Oversee grounds maintenance activities, including lawn care, landscaping, snow removal, tree and hedge trimming, weed control, and waste management.
Ensure campus grounds present a safe, welcoming, and professional appearance throughout the year.
Monitor work processes and equipment usage to maximize efficiency and safety.
Maintenance Shop and Asset Management
Manage the operation of the maintenance shop.
Maintain accurate inventory records for tools, equipment, and supplies.
Ensure proper storage, security, maintenance, and replacement of tools and equipment.
Purchase materials and supplies in accordance with approved budgets and purchasing procedures.
Requisition and manage equipment, tools, and operational supplies as required.
Heating Systems and Utilities
Oversee the safe and efficient operation of the campus heating system.
Coordinate all required inspections, certifications, repairs, and maintenance activities related to plant systems and utilities.
Ensure compliance with applicable safety and environmental regulations.
Transportation Management
Oversee the maintenance, safety, licensing, and inspection of school vehicles and buses.
Coordinate bus reservations and transportation schedules.
Assign qualified and authorized drivers for transportation activities.
Maintain records related to vehicle maintenance, inspections, and regulatory compliance.
Student and Community Responsibilities
Provide appropriate supervision of students as assigned.
Attend staff meetings and professional meetings as required.
Participate in campus supervision duties, including evening and weekend responsibilities when assigned.
Serve as sponsor or advisor for a class, organization, or club, as assigned.
Participate on various committees and support school events and activities.
General Information:
Vacation entitlement shall be provided in accordance with the SDACC Education Code and is based on years of service.
Twelve-month salaried employees should refer to annual administrative communications regarding statutory holidays and additional paid holiday provisions.

Education and Experience
High school diploma required.
Postsecondary education or trade certification in facilities management, building maintenance, construction, mechanical systems, or a related field is preferred.
Minimum of three to five years of progressively responsible experience in facilities, maintenance, operations, or plant services management preferred.
Supervisory experience is considered an asset.
Language and Communication Skills

Ability to interpret data, budgets, estimates, and operational reports.
Technology Skills
Proficiency with common computer applications, including:

Ability to learn and utilize new technologies and software applications as required.

Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations:
The employee is responsible for maintaining all certifications, licenses, and registrations required by:
The Board of Regents of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists;
The Province of Ontario; and
Any applicable regional or local governmental agencies.
Copies of all required certifications and licenses must be provided to the Vice President of Finance or designate for inclusion in personnel records.
A valid Ontario driver's license is required.

The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this position.
The Plant Services Director participates in a rotating on-duty schedule, including evenings, weekends, and designated holiday periods. During assigned duty periods, the incumbent serves as the primary operational contact for the campus and is expected to be available to respond to facility, safety, security, and operational concerns that arise outside of regular working hours.
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Noise levels are generally moderate but may occasionally require the use of hearing protection.
Hazardous materials may be present, requiring compliance with safety procedures related to handling, storage, and disposal.
Power tools, machinery, maintenance equipment, and vehicles are regularly used in the performance of duties.
Exposure to physical risks associated with maintenance and grounds operations may occur, requiring adherence to established health and safety practices.
